Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to inform you that construction of our website Women and Mission has begun. Please visit it at http://womenandmission.binghamton.edu/, where you will find our conference program, past newsletters, a schedule of events leading to the conference at Oxford University in April 2006, and an initial bibliography.

If you are planning to be at the Berks, we invite you to join us for dinner on Saturday evening, June 4. Connie Shemo and Barbara Reeves-Ellington will host a table (look for the "Competing Kingdoms" sign) at the Berks Barbecue on the Elm Tree Lawn at Scripps College from 5 to 7 p.m. Kitty Sklar and Rui Kohiyama will join us when they can. Our conversations can continue after dinner in the living room of the Grace Scripps Clark dorm.

We expect to hear the results of our fundraising efforts this summer and will be able to make definitive statements about our ability to defray the costs of conference presenters and web site participants then. In the meantime, our hosts at the Rothermere American Institute at Oxford University have made local arrangements. They inform us that the cost of registration, which will include most meals, is £85 and single rooms will cost approximately £70. Current exchange rates determine that £1.00 equals $1.93.

We would like to take the opportunity to remind conference presenters that their draft panel papers must be submitted to the conference organizers on May 1, 2005. Please submit your papers to the four organizers by e-mail to the addresses listed below. Please be sure that your paper engages with the analytical framework of the conference and contributes to the historical literature on American women and mission. Papers should be approximately 30 pages long, double-spaced, and meet the Chicago Manual of Style. In addition, please include an abstract of approximately 250 words.

As our arrangements for the conference progress, we look forward to working with you.

With best wishes from the organizing committee,
